MMA performed the design, construction and installation of 2 x 90te Fish Tower modules giving the engineered reef a total volume of 1,020m3.

Project Overview

The NSW Department of Primary Industries commissioned the installation of an artificial reef off the coast of Merimbula, on the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales.

MMA's Solution

MMA performed the design, construction and installation of 2 x 90te Fish Tower modules giving the engineered reef a total volume of 1,020m3.

The Fish Tower modules were designed to target a variety of marine biota, Australian design has been positioned in approximately 30m water depth and is based on our proven modules previously installed to the south of Rottnest Island.

Technical Details

The reef had to be installed in a water depth of 31m, approximately 2.5km south east of the Merimbula estuary. The Fish Towers had a footprint of 86m2 and a dry-weight of 92 tonnes. The design accounted for sliding and overturning stability for a maximum and significant wave height for a 1/100 year wave and a tow analysis.

The Fish Towers were fabricated on the quay side, lifted into the water with a mobile crane, towed to the installation site and sunk to the seabed.

MMA Innovation / Value Added

  • SACS analysis during design
  • Installation methodology resulting in no requirement for heavy lift and installation vessel
